CHRISTMAS DREAMING
Less than a month until Christmas! Have you done your shopping? Cleaning? Baking? Or are you like me, waiting for the last minute then rushing to get everything done?
Actually this year I'm ahead of the game. Since hubby retired and we relocated to Florida, Christmas is much more relaxed - mostly. With my son and his girlfriend both having birthdays in December I decided this year to purchase almost everything online and have it shipped directly to them. The few extra dollars for gift wrapping is worth not having to stand in line at the store to buy wrapping paper and again in line at the post office.
In between the hustle and bustle of shopping (online,) baking (a quick trip to the store,) and cleaning (who am I kidding?) I struggle to find the time to read. At Christmas time I like to read romances set around the Holidays, but I don't have the time to devote to full length novels, so I'm thrilled when I find a short Christmas romance. Something I can read while the pies bake (the frozen ones from the grocery store usually take about 50 minutes.)

Escaping Poison-- Releases December 24th!
The fourth book in my Diaspora Worlds series releases on December 24!
Escaping Poison is the story of the fourth brother, Karvar.
Each of Karvar's brothers embarked on a wild adventure and returned with a perfect wife. Karvar waited for his own adventure and perfect wife, but the years stretched by. No adventure, no wife. The adventure wasn't all that necessary, but he did want the wife and happy family life.
Mother always wanted one of her sons to marry into the New Prague society so he finally agreed to court a young New Prague woman of her choosing. Brielle, a general's daughter, was stunning, sweet, well educated and mannered, and she loved her little sisters. Karvar was certain they would do very well together.
Instead of enjoying a luxurious honeymoon with his lovely new bride, Karvar and Brielle are forced to hide at an old rain forest science station on the southern continent of the planet New Prague--the Big Poison. His carefully chosen bride was supposed to spy on his family for her blackmailers, but years of forced drug addiction took its toll and she collapsed on their wedding night.
Brielle knows their marriage is over before it even began, but she is just grateful she has a chance at a future that doesn't involved drugs and a mysterious handler. But the science station is firebombed--someone wants her dead!

Short Excerpt:
They stayed for some time. Brielle
took pictures of the pool and other glowing flowers, and of the drifts of
trillers moving from the plant to plant. Her own small triller flew to the
plants and flocks, but constantly returned to Brielle, perching on her head
like an exotic flower.
“I really thought she would leave
and join the other trillers,” Brielle said later as they moved toward the
flitter to leave.
A thundering roar filled the air
and bright, sharp light burned through the forest. Brielle screamed and Karvar pulled her down behind a tree. Debris flew through the forest, plants and bark
ripped up and thrown by something. He dragged her to the flitter and gunned it
into a vertical climb. As they breached the canopy there was a wall of fire
where their dome had been. Far above it, a New Prague starfighter. Before they
vanished into the greenery he took some frames of the ship with his focal.
There might be a designation they could to find what ship this was.
“We need to hide.” He plowed the small ship into a thick stand of
vines and bushes. “There are no large animals
within the fence that could hide our body heat signatures. Our bodies will be
the only thing of human mass around.” He began grabbing vegetation. “We have to
hide the flitter.”
She joined him, ripping large round
leaves and ferns from the soil. Soon the flitter was completely covered.
“Come on.” Karvar grabbed her
hand and dragged her through the forest to the pool. “The water will disguise
our body heat.” They went to the pool and Karvar hopped in. The water was only
to his chest. He held out his arms and she screwed her eyes shut and jumped.
The water was cool, not slimy or
anything. There were plants on the bottom brushing against her legs, which she
could feel through her thin leggings. He held her close, which was far too comforting,
but odd, because they only touched when necessary.
“Reeds.” Karver moved them to the
far shore, which had a growth of reeds reaching a couple feet above the water level. They half-walked, half-swam to a stand of reeds and flowering plants along the
opposite bank. They moved into the middle of them.
A bright light zoomed overhead
“Quiet now.” Karvar breathed right
into her ear.
Lila her triller found them and
fluttered wildly, along with a handful of her friends. She started to wave them
away.
“No. Looks natural. Wildlife…” Karvar
whispered and she held still. The air of the night was warm, but she was
already feeling cold. The bright light
moved on but then came back overhead.
Brielle began to shiver. Karvar wrapped
his arms around her and held her pressed tight to his front for warmth. A drone, not large, but menacing, with lights
and ocular devices on swiveling appendages, swept through the clearing. Lila
and the triller went crazy, whistling warnings and fluttering wildly.

Kick-butt heroines of Sci-fi Romance by Vijaya Schartz
The wonderful thing about
writing science fiction heroines, is that they can truly be whatever I want
them to be. They don’t even need to be human. They take charge and operate
beyond petty gender discrimination, wielding the power of true freedom...
unless, of course, I blast an alien grenade into their sophisticated advanced
society. That’s always fun to do. After all, without conflict, there would be
no story.
But not all futuristic
societies are advanced. Sometimes civilization goes backward, my heroine is
whisked into a parallel universe (SNATCHED), alien intervention or human
warfare destroys dreams of freedom. Then my heroines must restore balance to
their world.
Sometimes they are hard core
military by choice, like Tia in Anaz-voohri or Zania in Snatched. Sometimes I
like to throw them into the fray against their will and watch them flounder and
cope, as I imagine the worst possible situations to defeat them. Of course,
among all these great qualities of strength and courage, they also have flaws
and weaknesses. They usually perform well under pressure... until I find their
breaking point. Even then, I still want to be them.
I love my kick-butt heroines.
Whether they wield a sword, like in the CHRONICLES OF KASSOUK SERIES, a
blaster, or a bazooka, like in the ANCIENT ENEMY series, they confront their
fears with courage, and after much suffering, they usually save the day... or
the man they love, like in ALIEN LOCKDOWN.
Fiction reveals the writer’s
soul. We usually write about what we know. Like my futuristic heroines, I’m a
meditator, a fighter, a former gymnast, a skydiver, and a Martial Arts black
belt (Aikido). I love Japanese swords and learned how to use them. I believe
that even in future warfare, there will be a place for sharp blades. If an EMP
(electromagnetic pulse) or a solar flare renders all electronics useless, say
goodbye to your fancy weaponry. My heroines can still rely on a length of good
steel.
No sniggering, erotica
readers. The blade is meant to slay whatever soldier, tiger, or alien demon
wants to ruin the day. Of course, there are sizzling love scenes in my books as
well. My heroines do deserve their rewards. But I prefer to avoid dubious
metaphors.

Will MockingJay Part 1 Deliver?
I was SUCH a huge fan of The Hunger Games, and gobbled up Catching Fire.
Mockingjay--received on the day it was released, was such a bitter disappointment that I'm still not sure I'm over it! Admittedly, my expectations were in the stratosphere.
That said, it was still one of the best series I have ever read.
I have enjoyed the films--which surprised me as they are wildly miscast--and will also see Mockingjay Part 1 soon. Since this is the part of the story that went south in the series, I'm actually hoping Hollywood's annoying habit of changing books up actually happens here. Please.
Because this story had so much potential. Katniss...you coulda been a contendah!

Finding the balance between writing and family isn't always as easy as it appears. It is far too easy to get sucked into the wonderful worlds we create as an author and forget about the wonderful one that we live in. As the holiday season gets closer, so does the pressure of trying to make sure that balance doesn't tip over and crash down on you.
The holiday season is often a stressful time for anyone. It is also a time to step back and take a deep breath. For me this year, there are a lot of first... This is the first year where I am my own boss. In June of this year, I resigned my position and jumped into writing full time. As any author knows, there is a lot more to writing, then just the story. My husband thought I would quit working 80+ hours a week when I resigned my full time job outside the home. Instead, I have been working at least that much or more. The biggest reason is because it doesn't seem like work. I am really enjoying the challenges of being my own boss and have no regrets.
One of the things I promised, though, when I quit my other job was that I would take care of me. I've been doing that... mostly. LOL. It is still a work in progress. I make sure that the treadmill and I meet once a day for at least twenty minutes. I have also been better a 'disconnecting' from my electronic devices on my date night and meet once a week with the girls from work for lunch. Still, it is easy to stay up late, get up early, and forget to eat regularly.

As you can tell from my writing, family and friends are extremely important to me. Our house during the holidays if filled with love, laughter, and lots of good food. Some of the hilarious things I write about in my stories are based on getting all the kids together. I love hearing my kids, who are adults now, running around having Silly String fights, shooting Nerf darts at each other, or using the Light Saber Keychains as swords.
This season also brings my second grandchild into the world. My daughter is expecting in December and will need extra help. I plan to be there for her. I love the holidays and the music starts playing the day after Thanksgiving when the Christmas tree goes up. For me, the more, the merrier because that is what life is about... being there.

So, with all that is going on, you might ask... Where is the balance that you mentioned above? That is a great question. Once I figure it out, I'll let you know. I have to admit I love living in my many worlds, but I love living in my present one even more. The balance is making sure one does not overshadow the other and setting my priorities. That is the easy one. My family and friends will always come first. This way, I will continue to love what I am writing and so will my readers.
