New Release—Hadean 2: Survivor Road

I just released the second part of my apocalyptic series. This one based on a GMO trigger, but somewhere in the back of my mind I kept making a big deal of the rain. Sure, I live in the desert and I love the rain, but really was there a hidden meaning in it.

And then it clicked, no company would admit to the liability of bringing a nation to the brink of extinction, so there had to be a scapegoat somewhere about. Something that occurred naturally, something that could cause people to go crazy.

Rabies fit the bill.

And many would have bought it, except for one thing—the rain. You see another name for rabies is hydrophobia. Because of the effect on the muscles involved in swallowing those infected with rabies are afraid of the water.

In the words of the A-Team, I love it when a plan comes together.

Insanity is tearing America apart.
Mobs of crazies own the streets and club anyone who provokes their wrath.
Government officials are dead or are being hunted to extinction.
The National Guard is killing everyone in sight
The Air Force is bombing anything that moves.
Is this the legacy of genetic tampering or a terrorist attack with weaponized rabies?
As madness consumes the Vally of the Sun, a group of family and friends will run the gauntlet to escape the city.
They will depend on each other for safety and comfort.
They will trust in each other’s sanity.
Unaware their worst enemy is already among them, waiting to strike.

New Release—Hadean: Threshold of Extinction

Like a little Romance in your apocalypse? My latest release is still only 99cents.

Our food isn’t killing us; it’s changing us—turning us into killers.
For decades scientists have used viruses and bacteria to insert rogue genetic code into our food. Now human DNA is mutating. Switches are being flipped. Some will commit suicide; others will become homicidal maniacs.
One family.
A mother in the custody battle of her life.
A college graduate whose experiment foreshadows a grisly future
A teen whose final exam won’t be in English but in survival
Separated by miles.
Desperate to reunite.
When all hell breaks loose, every block is a gauntlet.

NEW RELEASE: SNOW CHEETAH, Book 5 in the Chronicles of Kassouk by Vijaya Schartz

Get ready, SNOW CHEETAH is coming in November HERE.

This is the very last book in the Chronicles of Kassouk series (I swear). It nicely caps the series as after a thousand years, a vessel from Earth discovers unexpected humans on this far-flung planet.

On a mission to annex a planet for Earth, Captain Martial Terrien faces a culture with incredible psychic abilities, and falls for its lovely but forbidden queen.

Natalia, future queen of Kassouk, pressured into bonding with a power-hungry prince, yearns to improve her people's lives. She finds the handsome Earth captain a refreshing distraction, despite his five fingers and ridiculous claim of being human, like the lowly workers of her world.

Captain Martial Terrien, nano-enhanced Space Marine from Earth, is on a secret, desperate mission to find his people a new home. The unexpected population on the chosen planet complicates his task, especially since the ruling caste can read minds, levitate, and teleport at will. Furthermore, the lovely princess and her pet cheetah take a shine to him... and beautiful women always spelled disaster in his past.

Natalia's jilted suitor, determined to reign at any cost, vows to annihilate the Earthlings. When the conflict escalates, can Martial obey Earth Central Command, or will he jeopardize the future of his race to save Natalia and her people?

EXCERPT:

When her arm weakened and her steps grew shaky, he did a somersault over her head, leaving her confused. Then he shoved her sideways, and tackled her. He pinned her to the soft mat, face up, while he held her sword arm to the floor.
He had her.
Her hair came undone around her head, like a bright halo on the soft gray mat, and her luminous green gaze locked with his. Her lips opened slightly, and he couldn't help but stare. She looked so helpless, her chest heaving. Her eyes unfocused and her pupils dilated. She was not playing the game anymore... neither was he.
Her breath hitched. He lowered his face to hers and hovered closer to marvel at her beauty. She kept staring at him. He couldn't resist the temptation to probe her mind. A mistake. She was calling to him, wanting him to kiss her. He lowered his gaze to her mouth and she licked her slightly open lips. How could he possibly resist her sensual call?
Slowly, deliberately, he brushed her pliant lips, enjoying the soft contact. When she tasted him with a lick, he held his fire, afraid she would balk at a fierce response. She had to be a virgin. Then she let go of the sword. He relaxed his hold, and she caressed his hair.
The sensation of her six-fingered hand on his head awakened shored up needs he could no longer contain. Cupping her fiery mane, he claimed her mouth and ravished it with the fervor of a starving man.
She moaned softly and arched under him, as if seeking body contact. Flashes of all the disastrous consequences their relationship could bring barely cooled his lust, but he must stop this now.
He steeled himself against the separation and rose slowly, with great reluctance.
She sat up on the mat, staring at him.
"I'm so sorry." He turned away. He couldn't watch her like that. "It won't happen again. I promise."
"Why not?" The disappointment in her voice and in her mind sliced him deeper than a sword.
"You are promised to another man." As good an excuse as any. The truth was too ugly to tell. His mission might require him to annihilate her entire race.
"I do not intend to become Kaylar's mate." The indignant tone told much about her dislike for the man.
Martial stiffened, closing his fists, then he faced her again. "I hope we can still be friends."
"Friends?" Tears welled in her beautiful green eyes.
"Or colleagues... diplomat and future queen." Martial still needed more information on the Starlings.
She swallowed a sob, quickly wiped a tear, then composed her face. "Maybe when you see more of our culture, you will understand that although our females often take a submissive role, we do have a choice in the matter. We are civilized."
"Of course, you are." He certainly felt like the Neanderthal here.
She rose from the floor and tossed her long wavy hair behind the shoulders of her impeccable white body suit. "Then shall we meet again tomorrow?" Hope softened her face. "I planned to show you our hydroponic installations."
"I accept, but I must bring my team." For his own protection. He didn't want to repeat past mistakes. And mistakes would certainly be made if he spent too much time alone with her.

New Release

Continuing the theme this week, I wanted to share my latest release. Although there is a slight romantic thread, the apocalyptic really deals with the things we're willing to do for love.

And guess what? Not all of it is good.

The end of our world was the beginning of theirs. A hundred years after the apocalypse, noble intentions will war with savage instinct.
Four groups of survivors.
One planet on the verge of extinction.
The battle for mankind’s future has begun.
Post-Redaction: Humanity's next chapter will be written in blood.

The Excitement of Pushing Up a Release Date

I mentioned last month that the release for my new book, The Turncoat's Temptress, is getting close. Well, after some soul searching and calculating, I realized there wasn't much point in waiting until April for the release. The book is ready, I'm ready. So, I'm turning it free into the world on March 26th instead of April 16th. It's always fun when you're able to beat the release date.

The Turncoat's Temptress is the third book in the Legends & Lovers series. Here's the blurb:

Basil Tinwhistle's life changed when he was nine years old and he revealed that he had a proclivity for finding the paranormal. Taken from his family and raised by a special order of men dedicated to memorizing legend and hunting monsters, he's risked life and limb to keep the United States safe from terror in the night. More than that, he left behind the only woman who ever held his heart.

Foreseer Nora Frost's parents abandoned her in favor of pursuing sideshow careers in a circus. Her grandmother raised her with a strict hand to prevent history from repeating itself. Nora has never felt comfortable with herself, except for the brief summer Basil spent at her grandmother's antebellum mansion. When Basil vanished without a word, he broke her heart and she vowed never to fall in love again.

Years later, on one of Nora's worst days, Basil suddenly reappears. The attraction between them is as strong as it was that long ago summer, but Basil is about to reveal a danger Nora never imagined—one that might tear them apart before they can repair the past.

Fun facts about the novel:
*This was my 2012 Camp NaNoWriMo project. It's the first book in the series that I didn't feel the need to completely re-write when it was finished (which can't be said for books 1, 2, and 4).
*The hero, Basil (bay-sil, not baz-il), was originally supposed to be a minor character in book 3. He was going to coerce the real hero (who's actually the hero of book 4) into working for him. Somewhere along the way I became fascinated with Basil because of his obsession with his appearance, his painful past, and his false leg. I always imagined it being chewed off by a monster, but actually, it was a lot simpler than that.
*The beginning of this book was something I started writing when I decided to rewrite book 1, which was set in Australia. It needed to be Americanized, so I thought about redoing all the characters. Nora Frost, the heroine, was born out of that rewrite.
*Basil's last name is Tinwhistle, but when I started writing about him, his last name was Tenpenny. I forgot that after I started focusing on edits for book 2. When I started a new draft of book 3, I wrote his last name down wrong, but it stuck.

When I'm not blogging here, I'm at Have Novel, Will Edit, on Facebook, Google Plus, and Twitter.

Just Goes to Show

That you should never put off til tomorrow what you should do today. Take me for instance, I've been iced under in my house since Thursday. I thought, nah, I've got plenty of time to get a blog post up. Here I am, Johnny-come-lately. *head hand of shame*

But being the recipient of sleet and ice in my house wasn't so bad. I had edits to do on my upcoming release of the third book in my Legends & Lovers series, The Turncoat's Temptress. From today it's 49 days until the release. I'm nervous, excited, and anxious to release it into the world. How about a little taste? Here's the first official excerpt.

Basil took his hand away from her face and reached inside his coat. He pulled out the tintype, bent, worn, a little faded, and set it on the table.
A younger Nora smiled up at them. Her mind pulled her back to the day the image was taken. When she thought she'd known what the world was about and love was the only thing that mattered. Basil had stood behind the photographer, making silly faces, trying to get her to laugh. She'd mastered her emotions and arranged her face in what she'd hoped was a seductive pose. After the flash of powder, she'd blinked away the light and found Basil looking at her with unmasked passion.
The heat of that look stayed with her. She still felt it, curling at her like flames over paper. It was different than the look he gave her now, but the old spark was there.
“You kept it because it reminded you that there's still some good in the world. And I wonder if you hoped that someday you might come back to it.” She stared at him daring him to deny it.
“I tried a dozen times that summer to tell you why I was at Brighton Manor. What I was. Who I was. Christopher and your grandmother both warned me not to. That it would only frighten you. So in the end I kept the secret.” He gazed down at the photograph then ran his finger along the edge. “Why haven't you run away yet? All this talk of fairytale creatures and the supernatural. Most women wouldn't stay.”
“I'm something of an oddity, Tinwhistle. I think you'd have learned that by now.” She touched the image. “We're magnets. Stuck together in this. Sometimes we might get flipped over, might push away from each other, but we'll always come back.”

Blurb:

Basil Tinwhistle's life changed when he was nine years old and he revealed that he had a proclivity for finding the paranormal. Taken from his family and raised by a special order of men dedicated to memorizing legend and hunting monsters, he's risked life and limb to keep the United States safe from terror in the night. More than that, he left behind the only woman who ever held his heart.

Nora Frost's parents abandoned her in favor of pursuing a sideshow career in a circus.

It's official release date is April 16, 2013.

Book Release - The Sky Pirate's Wife

Good morning, afternoon, day, evening, y'all. September has arrived and the day I've been waiting for is on the horizon. That day is when The Sky Pirate's Wife arrives in ebook format. September 17 to be exact.

This final draft of the book is a far cry from the original and I'm pretty surprised at the changes the characters took on when I look at both copies, but I'm also extremely pleased.

I love The Treasure Hunter's Lady, the book that started my Legends and Lovers Series, but The Sky Pirate's Wife plot is one that really stole my heart because I had a chance to develop the love story not just around an adventure, but one of my favorite things about it is how the hero comes to realize the meaning of "love of your life".

Blurb:
After a tragic airship wreck, Captain Alwin van Buren makes a drastic decision to obtain a wealthy bride in order to save his flagging business. He meets his match in Sophie Barnes, heiress to an airship empire. After he seduces her and ensures their marriage—igniting a rivalry with her godfather—he learns the green-eyed beauty is as headstrong as he is.

Sophie knows Van Buren's reputation based on a series of dime novels written about his adventures. Determined to be more than an end to a means, she despises him for luring her into marriage. In fiction, he's a no-nonsense captain on the verge of piracy, but the flesh-and-blood man wins her heart by proving she's worth more to him than her money.

Their love is threatened when Sophie learns Van Buren's airship accident was a result of mythical creatures. Winged predators that appear to have a grudge against him, a fact he deliberately hid by accusing her godfather of sabotage. If she can forgive him for that, they still have to face the danger when they're cornered and at the mercy of beasts and the evil that controls them. The real test comes when Van Buren is asked to make a sacrifice that could destroy them both.

Excerpt:
Sophie looked at the book in his hands. No one held the wheel but her. “You let go!”
He grinned. “You're doing fine, zoete. Keep her steady, she's climbing on her own.”
It wasn't the idea of being the only thing that stood between them and another flaming airship wreck that made her tremble. It was his smile. The kind that all women yearned to receive from a handsome man. “You should really take the wheel.”
My hands are full.” He waved the logbook at her, but replaced it and remained standing beside her. “You're doing very well.”
Are you certain?” The wind blew her hair and snagged her skirt. The horizon filled her line of sight and she suddenly understood the thrill of piloting a ship. It was like having the same freedom as a bird. She could point the ship in any direction and go wherever she pleased. Nothing had ever made her feel so alive. Except kissing Van Buren. Her head turned his direction like it was on a spring. She covered the sudden movement with a laugh. “I think I'm in love with your ship.”
His eyes darkened from icy gray to the shade of wet concrete. He lowered his mouth to her ear again and put his hand on her back. “Flying is a great deal like making love, Sophie.”
She nearly melted at her name on his lips. “W-why do you say that?”
It's instinctual. The mind and body work together, creating a moment of beauty. The first time is a little frightening, but once you find the rhythm, the proper technique, you have something very enjoyable on your hands. Something that you feel deep within your soul. Something that you never want to give up. With the right person, the kind of relationship you'd die to protect.”

You can find it on Amazon and Barnes & Noble on September 17! I also want to invite everyone to my Facebook release party and author chat on the 17th.
