Are we becoming cyborgs? by Vijaya Schartz
The future is here. Many of us already have surgical implants, heart valves, pace-makers, artificial knees, bionic legs, hands and arms controlled by the mind. Some have artificial lenses in their eyes, cochlear implants to allow the deaf to hear.
Science can now regrow in a lab new body parts or make them from biological material with 3D printers.
Babies can be born with the DNA of three parents. Animals have been cloned. Human cloning is illegal, but how long will it take for some governments to secretly grow their own human clones?
In China, tests have proven successful in creating improved babies by replacing DNA strands with stronger ones, or different ones. Soon, parents will be able to have designer babies, choosing the hair and eye color, the physical strength, the intelligence, the immunity to known diseases.
Nanotechnology (tiny microscopic machines introduced in the blood stream) will allow us to repair or rectify any malfunction in the human body, cure any disease. Some day humans will be quasi-immortals... and part robots. Linking the brain to computers will increase the capacity of the human brain.
The next step will be to produce super-intelligent human beings, super-soldiers, special individuals adapted to live in specific environments, like space, or on different planets.
These changes are happening quickly and soon, we'll have to deal with the problems of the future. We'll need new laws, new guidelines, to accommodate the progress of science. That's what makes science fiction fascinating.

A Change Will Do
About 4 years ago, my SciFi book, the Syn-En Solution was released. This was the cover:
I love the cover. It shows an interaction between Humans and Cyborgs.
Alas, my readers hated it. Some were reluctant to purchase it because of the cover. So I hired a new designer and asked her to come up with an alternative.
After a bit of back and forth, she came up with this style. The bottom part represents the cyborgs while the top screams SciFi.
I really love the new design and it will carry through in all my books. Of course, I couldn't contain my inner geek so I have them running from purple to red as in the colors of the visible light spectrum.
I wonder how many folks will get it?

A Little Romance
My current SciFi series follows one main couple around the universe because really, who says romance has to end when you're married? Not me. I find it romantic that my husband of 26 years will go to the store at 10PM on a Saturday night and get us Snickers bars. Or DQ for blizzards. Or Mac's for fries.
Romance isn't just about wooing to win someone. It's about wooing to keep them.
And so it is in my Syn-En series. But I can't help it if I have Noah's syndrome. Yes, I want people to pair up and be happy. So I always add another romantic subplot between secondary characters. It's not wrong. And best of all, my male readers don't have a problem with it (usually) Shh, don't tell them there's romantic elements.
Admiral Beijing York and his cyborg soldiers have been busy rescuing refugees since Humanity registered as sentient. Their latest mission takes them deep into hostile territory to Surlat, home of the Plague that nearly wiped out all life in the galaxy.
Their mission of mercy quickly turns into one of survival. For a dark secret will be revealed, igniting a war.
Can Bei save his wife and Syn-En family, or will they become the first casualties?

The Siren's Cry of Freedom
Smooshed as we are between American Independence Day and France's Bastille Day, I thought I'd write a short post about freedom. Freedom is one of those nebulous words. We are free to speak as we want but are free from Tyranny. We are free to worship, but free from oppression.
But as the cliche goes, Freedom isn't free.
It requires work, diligence and self-sacrifce.
Paradoxically, those freedoms must have controls for a society to function. Your freedom of speech doesn't include the right to yell 'Fire' in a crowded movie theatre. But you can spew hatred and intolerance from a street corner as long as another person can express their opinion of your subpar intelligence or walk away.
No society can exist without some constraints of freedom, but a society with some freedoms for all should exist.
The notion of freedom is a common one is SciFi. The Empire in Star Wars provides freedom for Tha select few. You are free to have your say in government if you survive your tour of duty in the Bug War in Starship Troopers. In my book, The Syn-En Solution, my Synthetically-enhanced humans (aka cyborgs) don't have any rights/freedoms because they are more machine than man. Nuances of the theme ripple throughout the Hunger Games, Divergent and Dune.
