Seen the movie MILLENNIUM - by Vijaya Schartz

Made in 1989, from an award-winning short story, Millennium features Cheryl Ladd and Kris Kristofferson.

In this movie, time travelers from a bleak future (one millennium ahead) have lost their reproductive abilities. They go back through time, to abduct passengers of planes about to crash, and replace them by lookalikes, in hopes to restart the Human race.
The oldest humans alive in the future are kept in tanks with skin grafts and tubes keeping them alive.

The hero (Kris Kristofferson) is the crash investigator, baffled by some of the details found in the black box recordings, and by some devices found in the wreckage.
The heroine (Cheryl Ladd)  is a time traveler observing the investigation. When errors are made, and futuristic devices are left behind, endangering the timeline, the heroine must manipulate the investigator any which way she can, even sexually... which makes for a funny dialogue, as she is inexperienced and unaware of the dating customs of the time.

Watching her eat an apple is priceless. Useless to say they fall in love... which complicates matters... a lot.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, including the ending, but although it was optimistic, it deprived the viewer of what kind of future they would have together. I would have liked a glimpse of their happily ever after... just to satisfy the romance reader in me.

War. And to the victor go the spoils, not just on Ryu's home planet of Itara, but Earth as well.

Ryu's Paradox is a short story that explains how the Timewalker Chronicles began, with a prison break on an alien world, a scientist who turned to the dark side, an evil queen, and the immortal Seer who is burdened with trying to stop the rise of an evil empire determined to take control of Earth for all time.

Ryu's Paradox is just the beginning, but it's one hell of a bumpy ride.

Time Travel and Sci-Fi and Romance, Oh My

Note: This post is a reblog from 2014

According to Wikipedia, time travel is an off-shoot of science-fiction. My book series, Tennessee Waltz, is time-travel plus sparkles--fairy sparkles that is.

And the final book in the series is almost here!
What started back in 2011 with Kiss Me, I'm Irish,

and Kiss Me, I'm Home in 2013

has finally come to fruition with Kiss Me, I'm Home.

Well, almost. It's currently in the editing process, but I wanted to give you a peek of the cover!

Here's the teaser:

The prickly Morgan Lee Faye has a penchant for family TV dramas and a dislike for the people around her, but she's the best travel agent in Tennessee. So good that she catches the eye of the mysterious proprietor of Avalon Travel Agency, Mr. Kane.

If Morgan accepts the job, she's promised adventure around the globe and gold for her pocket, but she worries the offer is too good to be true. It is. And Kane isn't the only with a creepy agenda. Her co-workers all seem to want a piece of Morgan's secret—even the two office hotties.

Honestly, she just wishes they'd all go away so she could watch Little House On The Prairie.

From Nashville to Avalon, faerie mischief is back!

Suction Cup On Your Soul... by Michele Callahan

FREE EVERYWHERE until Dec 15
I know Thanksgiving is officially behind us, but I think it’s important to maintain that attitude of gratitude every day. Why? Because life is tough. People get sick. They die. They hurt and struggle and are in pain. We are all part of this dance called life, and if we don’t focus on the good things around us, it’s very easy to be pulled down into the mud. The mud is cold and dirty and sticky, and it’s like a suction cup on our souls, keeping us down. That mud is sadness, hate, guilt, fear…you get the idea.
I think reading a good book helps pull us out of the mud of life. It can make us feel happiness, contentment, love, and compassion. Romance novels, in particular, can fill us up in a way not many books do. Romance is the best of all worlds…adventure, suspense, forgiveness and true love.
So, in my attitude of gratitude today, I’m going to list the top 10 things I’m thankful for today. I’m going to leave out the usual suspects, because I think they’re a given; family, health, and home. I’m going for the simple pleasures in life, the things that make us sigh with contentment that perhaps we don’t even notice. Like…
1) Romance Novels
2) All books in general3) Coffee4) Puppies5) Hugs6) Friends|7) Chocolate8) Google9) My Laptop10) Comfy Shoes
What’s on your list of simple things that make you happy?

Do You Think You're A Normal Human? by Michele Callahan

Timewalker Chronicles, Book 5

Imagine…a soldier stands before you. Tall, dark and handsome, he’s seen thousands of battles. He’s smoking hot, honorable, scarred, and has dangerous superpowers that you can barely comprehend.

But this warrior is not from your neighborhood, or even your country. He’s from another time…and another planet. He followed the enemy through a wormhole to come to Earth over seven hundred years in his past to try to save humanity.

And he needs your help. Here’s where it gets tricky. You think you’re a normal human? Well, you’re not. You’re what the Immortals call a Timewalker…you just don’t know it. And with the knowledge, and the awakening of your dormant DNA, comes power. Lots of power.

Now what? Do you have what it takes to save the world and win the heart of this Immortal warrior?
In WHITE FIRE, Emma Lawson is going to answer those questions the hard way. Keep your fingers crossed for her, because if she isn’t up to the task, Earth will fall, and life as we know it is over.
(Now, you can only imagine this scenario of you believe humans might have unknown superpowers. Well? Do you believe? What’s your superpower?)

Red Night, Book #1 - FREE everywhere
White Fire, Book 5  Released Nov 9, 2014
   About White Fire:
Timewalker Chronicles (Book 5)
Ajax, The Lost King of the Immortals, sacrificed everything but his memories. After the Time Crux, the loss of his beloved Queen, and a horrifying defeat at the hands of the Triscani horde in the war on Itara, Ajax’s loyal crew played a desperate gamble...to go back in time on Earth and try to change things. But they trusted the wrong man, and Ajax has spent the last seven hundred years locked in a prison with no key. The battle approaches at long last, yet he remains weak and tortured, a prisoner to his own dark power. He didn’t simply lose to the evil Triscani…he became one of them.

The Triscani spent centuries searching for Emma Lawson's soul. Their evil Hunters did everything they could to destroy her family's bloodline before she was ever born. They know who she is, so they hunt her. They know the power she yields, and they fear her. They know The Lost King will do anything to save her, and they would use his love to destroy him.

But Emma is human, not Immortal. She might be dangerously attracted to the newly freed Ajax, but her first priority is saving Earth from two warring Immortal races. Ajax believed himself in love with his Queen, but the woman he remembers no longer exists. This Timewalker will defy destiny, and she's not going to play by anyone's rules but her own.

BLENDING ROMANCE SUB-GENRES

I love to read and write all types of romance, contemporary, western, historical, sweet, erotic, and fantasy, to name just a few, but my favorite sub-genre is Sci-Fi Romance. Where else can you mix and match the sub-genres so easily?

A sci-fi romance can be set in the past, present or future. It can be based in our everyday world, in another galaxy far, far away, or in an alternative universe. It can include elements of fantasy. It can be sweet or erotic.

Do you love mystery? There's no reason that a sci-fi romance can't include a mystery. Whatever the author imagines can become real to the reader.

I've written three sci-fi romances and hope to write more in the future. Or maybe I'll invent a time machine and go write them in the past.

What's your favorite flavor of romance?

Warning...Sci-Fi Will Sneak Up On You by Michele Callahan

COMING JUNE 15!

Science Fiction is sneaky.  Stuff that was written 30, 40, or 50 years ago is suddenly coming true.  Cell phones, scanners that know what's in your blood without poking you, tablets, Google glass, surgery without scalpels, weapons of mass destruction, space travel, submarines, sonic weapons, genetic mutation, cloning.

Someone long ago dreamed of these things well before they were invented.

What if everything you read in that sci-fi book last week were to come into being?  Portals through space time, wormhole generators, faster than light-speed travel, bending space, one scan healing for the entire body, colonies on other planets.  That would be awesome.  But some of it's scary, too.  Genetic discrimination, advanced weaponry, war, and mind control.  Evil alien races, time-travel, and annihilation of our species.

COMING JUNE 28!
In a room somewhere, right this second, someone is thinking up the future.  A future that will turn out to be very, very real.  As a sci-fi author, I often wonder about the things that pop into my mind.  Is my imagination that crazy?  Do I have an angel whispering over my shoulder?  Or are human beings all connected to each other in a cosmic soup that makes seeing the future not such a far-fetched idea?

Honestly, I have no idea.  What I do know is that people amaze me.  Real people.  Ordinary people.  And no matter what manner of insanity the future throws at us, a hero will rise up and face it.  That hero might be man, woman, or child.  Might be a soldier, a doctor, a chef, or a painter.  But when life sneaks in a low blow, humanity rises to the challenge.  We have that power, and it's one I firmly believe in.  I have faith in our world.  Call me an optimist.  Call me crazy.  I don't mind.  In my stories people rise up against horrible evil, and win.

If I'm creating the future, I'm going to make sure I do it right.

I'm curious...what kind of inventions do you think the future holds?  Good or bad?  Exciting or frightening?  Me? I still want to be able to say, "Beam me up, Scotty."
THAT would be smothered in awesome-sauce.

Science Fiction Tropes

Female Android Robot in Space Station courtesy of Victor Habbick via FreeDigitalPhotos.net
What's your favorite trope? Is there one that makes you cringe every time you see it used (AGAIN?!). Of course, even the most tired tropes can sometimes be reinvented and become fan favorites. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but here are a few that leap to mind:

1. Alien comes to earth and falls in love or befriends a little kid.
2. Virtual reality interface somehow becomes real, or you find out at the end that none of what you just read was real because all the characters were in a virtual reality.
3. Aliens come to earth to take our resources because their world has been depleted. (Riiiiight--they want our fossil fuels. How else will they get home?)
4. Computers used to protect/help humans become power-hungry sentient beings, or they decide to kill off the human race because it has become too corrupt.
5.  Robots going all Frankenstein on their creators/mankind.
6.  Alien abductions.
7.  Aliens using humans as game.
8.  Time travel used to avoid a catastrophe, or to improve a person's future.
9.  Earth governments are really made up of alien beings and they have a nefarious plan they've been sitting on for centuries. Well, judgement day just came, you sorry bastards.
10. A normal guy suddenly discovers he is the chosen one. He learns to harness powers he lived 18 years without realizing he had, and recruits a group of misfits to eventually overthrow the alien evil doers hell-bent on destroying his planet for no good reason.

So, what are some of your favorite/least favorite tropes? :-)

Time-Space Continuum and Hooped Skirts

Sometimes the time-space continuum isn't just for science-fiction.

Time travel borrows the basic aspects in fourth dimension style. And since romance transcends all dimensions, well, that leaves readers with a fun story.

My brand new Kindle release, book two of the Tennessee Waltz series, KISS ME, I'M YOURS, explores this theme via time travel and unseen realms with plenty of romance...and hooped skirts.

When jilted Sophie Bowen stumbles into a stone circle filled with fireflies, she wakes up in a very different place—and time.

Beaten down by Lincoln's War and personal tragedy, Gabriel Merritt feels his life has become a lost cause.

In a post-war South still licking its wounds, Sophie and Gabriel struggle to understand the place they each find themselves in, while fighting a war of attraction.

And a mysterious twelve-year-old girl just might hold the key to it all
.

The first book in the Tennessee Waltz series is Kiss Me, I'm Irish.

So get your Einstein on, and explore the twists and turns of time travel romance!

EXCERPT:

"All sexual relations have been abolished in these parts," the synthetic voice volunteered.

"Abolished?" Zania stifled a nervous chuckle as she kept walking. "It doesn’t make much sense."

"The tendencies that bring sexual passions, or passions of any kind, also breed violence, and all violence has been bred out of the citizens of this Earth. It is the price they pay for lasting peace and safety."

The concept sounded so foreign, Zania started to suspect she had wandered into delirium. She must have lost her mind. "Did you say Earth?"

"That’s what the natives call their planet."

The natives? So her captors were from some other place? From space? Zania slowed down but remembered she had to keep walking in order to get answers.

"This Earth is different from yours. It survived. Your native planet is long gone."

"Gone?" How could a planet be gone? "What do you mean?"

"Gone as in destroyed, reduced to interstellar dust, volatilized."

Zania couldn’t accept that. The idea that Earth as she knew it was no more bothered her beyond belief. "When did that happen? How long have I been unconscious?"

"Your battle happened one thousand, three hundred and thirty one Earth years ago," the voice stated with confidence.

"What?" Zania’s legs turned to mush. Something in her gut told her it was the truth. Her father, her brothers, her cheating boyfriend, all dead... They never found her body, declared her MIA. "How is that possible?"

"You were selected and preserved for our specific purpose."

"What purpose?" Zania couldn’t stand not being in control of her own destiny. "Who made that decision for me?"

"We did."

That We again. The corridor ended into a sharp turn. The sound of many voices filtered into the hallway. "What’s this place?"

"The time has come to perform your duty."

Before Zania could protest, she emerged into a brightly lit arena, with people in the bleachers, cheering and yelling her name. They all wore gray robes and hid their faces under a hood, like ghosts. "Why do they all wear gray?"

"Color is not allowed on their Earth. Color breeds passions."

"But I wear blue, and the mat is red."

"This is clandestine entertainment We provide for them. They hide their faces for fear of being recognized."

Stepping on the soft red mat, Zania raised her gaze to the highest levels of the arena and noticed a gigantic projection of herself on the ceiling.

The deep blue veils suited her well, enhancing her dazzling blue eyes and apricot complexion, and revealing much of her body. With the long flowing hair and the eye makeup of an Egyptian queen, Zania hardly recognized herself. She looked more beautiful than she remembered. Of course, she’d never been the pampering type.

The cheering suddenly stopped and Zania realized she no longer stood alone on the mat of the arena. There, in the bright light, walked a tall muscular man, young, his long blond hair framing a tan face with icy gray eyes... The visage of Adonis on Hercules’ body.

Her gaze roamed over the regular lines of his jaw, the full, sensual lips, dimpled chin, down the expanse of his hairless pectorals, and stopped on the leather cod piece embossed with Tor’s hammer. That’s all he wore.

So, he was a Viking. Zania could easily imagine him swinging a sword or a battle axe like his ancestors. He certainly had the biceps for it. His bare thighs bulged with muscles, yet his face held an almost feminine beauty. She couldn’t help a shiver of appreciation for this perfect male specimen.

"Are you Adonis himself?" If he were, Zania would have to prostrate herself.

"No, Zania. My name is Svend." His amused smile told her he enjoyed her surprise. "Who is Adonis?"

"Never mind." How could he not know the gods of the Pantheon?

The synthetic female voice interrupted her thoughts. "This is the mate We selected for you."

"Mate?" Zania realized only she could hear the voice as Svend didn’t react to the outrageous comment.

"You must join with him here, now, for the pleasure of our illustrious clients." The lack of emotion clashed with the loaded words. "In exchange, you will live another day."

"You don’t say." Mating was out of the question.

"Think before you decide. If you delight the crowd, you may be auctioned off to a prosperous patron, or even earn your freedom."

Freedom... That had been Zania’s battle cry. "This is blackmail!" As a soldier, she had no tolerance for such practices. She didn’t risk her life in combat to end up as an unwilling porn star. "I’m not mating with this..." She lacked the words. Viking prince? Golden god?

Svend smiled and walked to her with debonair confidence. "Shall we give them a good show? How long has it been since you were fully satisfied?" The deep voice caressed and enveloped her.

How long indeed! "Don’t touch me!" How dare this stranger think she’d go along with his parody of seduction. "I can only have sex with a man I love." The man she’d loved had cheated on her while she fought on the front. Of course, she’d had casual sex before, and sacred sex at the temple as well, but she wanted to make a point.

 Happy Reading!
